As one of the largest bakery groups in the UK, we bake for millions of people every week. This scale brings a significant responsibility: to ensure that high-quality, large-scale baking doesn’t cost the earth.
This scale brings great responsibility. We believe producing high-quality treats must go hand in hand with protecting the planet. To achieve this, we’ve embedded a “field to fork” approach across our operations, reducing our environmental footprint at every stage.
Our commitment to a greener bakery supply chain is central to our business. We focus on three key areas: cutting our carbon footprint, minimising waste, and conserving natural resources. Through our dedicated excellence program, we continuously push for improvements that keep our large-scale baking responsible and forward-thinking.
Strengthening the Bakery Supply Chain Through Responsible Sourcing
A sustainable bread supply chain starts long before we fire up our ovens.
We carefully choose our raw materials with the environment in mind. For instance, we’ve been part of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil since 2014, and today, 99% of the palm oil we use is fully segregated and certified. We apply the same care to our cocoa by partnering with organisations like Fairtrade and the Rainforest Alliance.
Quality is always at the heart of what we do, even as we improve our sourcing. In early 2024, we made the switch to cage-free eggs across all our products, including those for our own brands and retail partners.
These choices show that it’s possible to combine quality and ethics. We work closely with our suppliers to make sure our ingredients help support people and protect the planet.
Tackling Food Waste with Smarter Inventory Management
Efficiency is at the heart of sustainability in food manufacturing, especially since food waste is one of the biggest contributors to global greenhouse gas emissions.
We’re proud to be a “zero waste to landfill” group. Our teams regularly review waste at our bakeries to find ways to reuse or repurpose it. Through partnerships with charities like “The Bread and Butter Thing,” we make sure surplus products reach local food banks instead of going to waste.
Using smart inventory management and real-time data monitoring, we keep our stock levels just right. For example, by monitoring water usage with half-hourly data loggers across all sites, we’ve cut our water consumption by over 20%.
Every small step helps us bake more precisely to meet demand. Cutting food waste shows how modern manufacturing can respect every ingredient and support sustainability goals.
Modernising Bread Distribution and Delivery Models
Getting our products to customers efficiently is a big part of how we care for the environment.
As we focus on improving bread distribution and delivery, we also pay close attention to our factory operations. Our Energy Improvement Teams at each site keep a close eye on utility use to spot where we can cut emissions. For example, at one of our cake factories, we capture waste heat from compressors to warm water for cleaning.
These efforts help us deliver fresh, quality products reliably while being responsible stewards of the planet. We’ve also joined the UK Plastic Pact and WWF Basket Goal, aiming to cut the environmental impact of UK shopping baskets by half by 2030. From recycling over 1,100 tonnes of paper and cardboard to installing timers on high-energy equipment, we’re always looking for ways to make our logistics and operations greener and more efficient.
Creating a More Sustainable Future
Our vision is a future where high-quality baked goods are synonymous with environmentally friendly practices. We don’t just talk about change; we put it into action.
As a leading example in the food and baking manufacturing industry, we’re proud to show that it’s possible to combine sustainability with great-tasting products. We don’t just talk about change; we put it into action through ongoing projects that support our carbon reduction goals and help shape a better future for the whole industry.
